Summary of ideas submitted in the Transport category…

  • A joint venture should be established between the NRA, Irish Rail and wind farm operators in order construct wind turbines across the rail and road network. These locations will be scattered across the country and are already relatively noisy, reducing the risk of objections.
  • A number of buses are now gradually being put out of use in Dublin Bus. Similarly Bus Eireann has reintroduced brand new double-decker buses in Cork. Rather than buying new buses why doesn’t Dublin Bus lease the unused buses to Bus Eireann for use in the regional cities?
  • A problem for SMEs is having half loaded trucks for delivery to Europe and this is too expensive. Set up a state sponsored company that becomes a transport hub for existing companies and set up companies wishing to export initially to the UK and Europe. That company then becomes a logistics manager for SMEs and will source and manage the delivery of the goods in a cost effective manner.
  • A taxi driver driving along the air coach route should pick up passengers and charge them the same fare.
  • A transport regulator should be established to encourage private sector operators to compete against Bus Eireann.
  • A website should be provided to link up all public/private providers of public transport.
  • Abolish plans for a Metro. No need for it.
  • Abolish road tax and third party vehicle insurance. Calculate a loading per kilometre of mileage travelled and the levy at the fuel pump. Calculate pay for the upkeep of the roads by the amount of petrol you use. This would entice more people to use public transport. Third Party Insurance component could be calculated for the entire national transport fleet and the contract for the year is put out for tender annually.
  • Abolish road tax on vehicles and introduce a higher tax on the price of a litre of fuel. Those who drive more would pay more tax and those that do not drive much can pay less. Enables cars bought in the UK to pay taxes. Less people needed in the civil service.
  • Abolish road tax on vehicles and introduce a higher VAT on the price of a litre of fuel. Those who drive more would pay more tax and those that do not drive much can pay less. Enables cars bought in the UK to pay taxes.
  • Abolish subsidies for flights from regional airports to Dublin.
  • Abolish the NCT.
  • Abolish VRT. Increase road tax and duty on petrol and diesel. Road tax increases in line with CO2 output.
  • Add a levy to petrol so that it covers the costs of third party fire and theft for every driver meaning that there are no uninsured drivers on our roads
  • Add advertising to the back of road signs to generate revenue for the Government for R&D and capital investment projects.
  • Add advertising to the bottom of motorway entrance signs.
  • Aer Lingus and Ryanair should establish a cooperative deal to optimise the use of slots.
  • Allow businesses that are incorporated and registered to use ‘green’ diesel in their commercial vehicles. Make Ireland more competitive.
  • Allow cars to turn left on red.
  • Allow cars with three or more people to use bus lanes.
  • Allow company car drivers to accumulate the mileage they travel on trains, buses, ferries etc for annual business mileage. There is a disincentive for company car drivers to use public transport because they have to rack up the miles in their car to keep their BIK low.
  • Allow drivers to turn left on a red light.
  • Allow Dublin City Council to charge for kerbside parking (i.e without a driver) of buses in the city.
  • Allow for a rebate on businesses on diesel.
  • Allow hybrid vehicles to use bus lanes and reduce VRT on hybrids by 50%.
  • Allow minibus taxis to operate on bus routes. This will allow people to get to their destination faster and should cost in and around the same as a normal bus fare. This would also cut down the amount of time people would be waiting for a bus.
  • Allow teachers and other civil servants to job swap where they respectively live nearer the others place of employment.
  • Allow the haulage industry to use the M50 free of charge, thus helping economic competitiveness.
  • Allow traffic to turn left on a red light, similar to how the traffic can turn right on red.
  • An Post should operate a rural transport service while using their postal delivery vehicles. This should be mainly in rural areas and linked to regional and intercity trains and bus services. A similar scheme exists in Switzerland.
  • Any willing, able-bodied people on the dole should be utilised to continue the National Development Plan.
  • Anyone with a provisional licence should only be allowed to drive at 50kph for under 21s and a maximum of 70kph for all others.
  • Apply a toll to Dublin Port Tunnel and to all tolls. Implement a rate at certain times, cheaper when the tunnel is not busy thus enticing people to use it at off-peak hours.
  • Apply the airlines’ systems of optimum resource use (timetabling, positioning, crew rosters, etc) to Dublin Bus. Reduce the number of “As Seirbhis” buses being repositioned and achieve greater efficiency.
  • Apply the new taxation regime to all cars, not just new cars, making it more efficient for people to trade up to a new fuel efficient car.
