Summary of ideas submitted in the Sport category…
- Bring back betting tax.
- Build a national stadium.
- Continue to invest in sporting initiatives such as the Abbotstown Sports Campus and the local authority swimming pool programme
- Convert the empty retail parks on the edge of every town in Ireland into sports amenities.
- Create more mountain bike and running trails in our forests and parks. This will encourage more people to get outside in the evenings and at weekends.
- Develop an all-Dublin team to compete in the English Premiership using the new Lansdowne Road as its home ground.
- Develop inter-club/county competitions for overseas teams as part of a strategy to promote both sport and tourism
- Encourage people to get fit.
- Establish more boxing clubs for the boys, and encourage marching lessons for the girls
- Establish virtual golf clubs that would act like normal clubs but would not be affiliated to any one course. The members of the ‘virtual club’ could then travel to various courses and pay green fees on each course attended with the hope of gaining discounts based on the number of ‘virtual club’ members visiting the course
- Existing funding to all community halls should only be given to the owners on the basis that there is a joint running committee for all the halls in the region in order to ensure that they are used and don’t become dilapidated.
- Hold more dance competitions for teenagers.
- Horse breeders should have to pay tax.
- Incentivise unemployed sports people to train sports teams in schools. They could be paid a bonus on top of their social welfare.
- Individuals should be encouraged to participate in sport - either to play or coach. Costs could be subsidised by the Department of Health.
- Introduce tax relief on gym memberships.
- Invest and specialise in specific minority sports such as cycling with the aim of winning medals at the next Olympics.
- Invest money in an Irish-based elite soccer training academy.
- Invest more money in athletics facilities to promote the sport and attract international events
- Launch a children’s equivalent of the Olympics
- Launch a national youth sports program.
- Launch a series of tennis lessons on primetime TV.
- Launch a study to assess how we can use the country’s reservoirs for water sports and other leisure pursuits.
- Launch Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs)
- Make cycling acceptable in the workplace by promoting cycling to meetings.
