  • As a member of successful workers’ furniture co-operatives for 30 years I think we should set up more workers’ co-operatives. The furniture manufacturing industry collapsed over the last 10 years with the loss of thousands of. Imported furniture was the major cause of these closures. High taxes on some imports would get manufacturing going again in this country.

  • Conduct research to see how companies that have left our shores are getting on and try increase competitiveness to get them back
  • Copy websites such as www.yet2.com who have posted real life problems and had solutions submitted from all over the world
  • County councils should make community halls available free of charge as venues where people can create commodities.
  • Create a ‘Team Ireland’ green T-shirt to be earned or sold. This would be readily identifiable using the ‘Ideas Campaign’ logo. These ‘Team Ireland’ shirts could be earned or won or even sold.
  • Create a Government website listing all imports. This would enable entrepreneurs assess import substitution potential.
  • Create a subsidiary in a company like Bord na Mona to recycle all waste.
  • Create state-assisted manufacturing ‘micro clusters’ where firms from the same sector come together to compete for large contracts.
  • Cut the maximum Lotto jackpot to €1million and give the balance to the Exchequer.
  • Design and manufacture energy efficient bulbs that resemble the old style bulbs.
  • Each household should have a waste bin for organic materials to produce petrol. Tonnes of vegetable are dumped each day and this could be used as the raw material to create ‘man made petrol’ (ethanol) and create jobs.
  • Establish a state-owned wind turbine company.
  • Find a way to trap and purify rain water domestically. Develop flood prevention methods other than sandbags.
  • Form panels of experts to review manufacturing facilities which are losing money and make recommendations as to how to improve their business.
